this book is dedicated to the 55th mass (colored) regiment (sister to the glorified 54th mass). from readville , mass. to the 55th heroic stand at honey hill as part of general sherman's "sweep to the sea" battle.

the recruitment was paid for by wealthy white quakers and other political activists already a part of the anti-slavery movement. the mass governor andrews and frederick douglass lent their support to that movement.
